PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University women's basketball team competed against Medaille University at home for a Friday night Empire 8 matchup. The Cardinals claimed a 91-53 victory over the Mavericks. With this win, Fisher's record improves to 18-2 overall and 13-0 in the Empire 8, with the Mavericks moving to a record of 5-13 overall and 3-9 in conference play.
The first quarter started out quickly, with
Claire Kruszka making a good layup and
Katie Moravec scoring a good jumper in the first minute. The two teams went back-and-forth until Ka. Moravec made a layup to start a seven-point run.
Hannah Ferguson added a layup, with Ka. Moravec making a jumper in the final seconds of the quarter, the score 20-14 with the Cardinals winning. Fisher picked the game right back up in the second quarter, with
Kaitlyn Walker making two layups in the first minute and a half.
Lauren Nawojski and Kruszka both scored, with the Mavericks following with three points of their own, Fisher leading 28-17.
Emilia Johnson quickly replied, scoring a layup, shortly followed by a three-pointer. The half ended with Kruszka making two free-throws, putting the score at 49-25.
The second half started out in the Cardinal's favor, with Walker scoring a layup, nine seconds in, and starting a 15-point run.
Sidney Tomasso scored the last layup of the run, pushing the Cardinal's lead to 64-25. Both teams shared the points for a few minutes, before Kruszka's three-pointer started an 11-point run. The quarter ended with Nawojski scoring a jumper, the score 80-35. Fisher had a slow start to the final quarter, with Kruszka scoring a jumper nearly five minutes in, the score 82-41. The Mavericks replied quickly, followed by Nawojski scoring a good jumper, followed by another jumper a minute later. Fisher's final points came from a good three-pointer made by
Lauren Petrie, the Cardinal's winning 91-53.
Leading the game for the Cardinals was Kruszka, scoring 19 points, five assists, and three steals. Walker was next for Fisher, shooting 8-for-11 to score 17 points, while also collecting seven rebounds. Ka. Moravec also had a good game, scoring 13 points, collecting three steals, and three assists. Johnson shot 4-for-5 to score nine points, while also collecting four steals and three rebounds.
The Cardinals play again at home on Saturday, Feb. 4., for Senior Day. They take on Houghton University for a 2:00 p.m. Empire 8 matchup.
