Men’s Basketball Defeats Mavericks in Friday Night Match-Up

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher University men's basketball team hosted Medaille University on Friday night. After 40 minutes of play, the Cardinals won by a score of 86-65. With this win Fisher now holds a 14-6 overall record and is now 10-3 in conference play. The Mavericks fall to an overall record of 6-13 and is 4-8 in conference play.

Connor Recore had the first four points for Fisher to get their scoring started early on. Ryan Gentile sunk a three point shot, assisted by Recore, to give the Cardinals an early two-point lead. Cole Thompson kept the momentum rolling tallying three points, his first of the game. The Mavericks consistently fought back, tying the score up three different times, and gaining a 19-16 lead with 11 minutes to go. Daniel Cook had the equalizer, tying the game up at 21-21 with 8:40 to go in the first half. Brendan McRoy sunk a three that ultimately gave Fisher the push they needed to take the lead and hold onto it. Eric Kegler went hard to the basket, and drew a foul. He capitalized on the conversion, giving the Cardinals a five point lead. As the clock was counting down, Matt Panara hit a three, assisted by Jack Foley. The Cardinals went into halftime with a 42-33 lead.

The Cardinals came out fast from halftime. A steal by Cook was transitioned to Recore who took it hard to the basket and converted it for two points, Fisher leads 46-33. Foley made a three, to start an eight point run for the Cardinals. With 13:34 to go, Fisher led by a score of 57-41. One play later, Panara hit a three assisted by Kegler, and in just three minutes Fisher tallied 11 straight points. Cook tallied four, Joe Morrell added two and Akinlana Popoola converted on two free throws to add to the run. With these two big runs, Fisher created a gap that the Mavericks couldn't seem to come back from, 68-42 with 8:56 to go. Morrell hit a three to give Fisher their largest lead of the night so far, 71-43, up by 28 with 7:10 to go. As regular time was ending, Louis Fay got on the board, tallying his first two points of the game. Popoola finished out the scoring for Fisher, converting on his last two free throw attempts. After time ran out, Fisher came out on top by a final score of 86-65.

Recore lead the team with 13 points, two assists, two rebounds and went 6-for-6 on field goals. Popoola was right behind with 12 points on the night, two rebounds and went 7-for-7 on free throw attempts. Foley and McRoy both ended with 11 points. Foley with six rebounds, four assists.

Up next for the Cardinals, on Saturday Feb. 4th they will host Houghton University at 4pm and honor the seniors for Senior day.
