Men’s Basketball Clinch Playoff Spot With Senior Day Win

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher University men's basketball team competed against Houghton University at home on Saturday. The team celebrated Seniors Matt Panara, Jack Foley, and Daniel Cook and all that they have contributed to the team over the years. At the end of regulation, Fisher won by a score of 81-69. The Cardinals jump to an overall record of 15-6, and is 11-3 in conference play. The Highlanders fall to 5-14 and 4-8 in conference play.

Cook started senior day with a dunk assisted by fellow senior Foley, to get a strong start to the first half. Ryan Gentile was next to get on the board for Fisher, he sank a three, and 25 seconds later added another two points, assisted by Cook. The Cardinals went on a 14-point run to bring the score to 17-3 with 13:24 to go. Brendan McRoy picked the energy back up with a dunk and Cook found the basket, tallying two to give the Cardinals what was their biggest lead of the first half, 20 points with 6:21 to go. Cook finished out the scoring for the first half with a three-point play. The Cardinals led by a score of 42-29 going into halftime.

Cook started out the second half scoring and Gentile followed right behind, hitting a three point shot in their next offensive possession, assisted by Foley. The Cardinals pushed hard and got the next five points in 30 seconds. Recore with a layup and Foley with a three, 52-29. With 14:32 to go, Thompson took it hard and laid it in, putting Fisher up by 24. Joe Morrell and Eric Kegler totaled a combined five points in 30 seconds to keep the momentum on the Cardinals side. The Highlander tried to hang on but could not keep up with Fisher's pace. Panara recorded a steal and made a fast break layup to put the team ahead, 77-55 with 3:27 to go. Connor Williams got on the board with two minutes to go for the first time in the game and finished out the scoring, adding four points. The Cardinals won by a final score of 81-69.

Cook led the way with 20 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, three rebounds, and two blocks. Gentile was right behind with 13 points, and went 100% on free throws. Foley finished with 11 points, four assists, five rebounds and one steal. 

Up next for the Cardinals, the teams last regular season home game on Tuesday, February 7 against Utica University. The Empire 8 matchup is set to start at 7:30pm.
