PITTSFORD, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher women's lacrosse team is set to compete in their first regular season game and home opener Wednesday, March 1st at 4pm against the University of Rochester. The team heads into the season receiving votes in the preseason Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) poll and the USA Lacrosse Magazine poll.
Last Match-Ups
These two teams have matched up twice in program history. They first saw each other in 2018 in Pittsford, NY. The Cardinals dominated in that game winning by a final score of 12-2. Fisher last saw the Yellow Jackets in February of 2019 at home. Once again, Fisher took control the game from the start, bringing the score to 9-2 at half, and winning by a final score of 13-3. The Cardinals look to go bring their win streak to three against the Yellow Jackets on Wednesday night.
Players to Watch
The Cardinals return sophomore midfielder Sydney Carpenter at the 2023 team. Carpenter led her team in points during the 2022 season with 36 goals and 30 assists. She was named IWLCA First-Team All-Region, the Empire 8's Player of the Year, Empire 8's Rookie of the Year, First-Team All-Conference, and Named the Empire 8 Championships Most Valuable Player during the 2022 season. She appeared in 18 games for the Cardinals and recorded 119 draw controls and 36 ground balls to go along with 13 caused turnovers.
Another key returner is senior midfielder, Courtney O'Dea. She started in all 19 games for the Cardinals during the 2022 season. She tallied 27 goals and 29 assists, finishing second in points for her team. She was named Second-Team All-Empire 8 for her contributions during the season.
The Cardinals starting goalie from the 2022 season, Senior Lilly Goodsell will be returning in net. She was named Third-Team All-Conference in her first year as the teams primary goalie. She appeared and started in all 19 games for the Cardinals, recording 121 saves with a save percentage of .443.
