Baseball Drop Pair To Salisbury

SALISBURY, MD – The St. John Fisher University men's baseball team (1-2) finished their weekend dropping both games against Salisbury (5-0).They dropped the first game 9-8 before being downed 13-1 in the game two of the doubleheader.

Sea Gulls 9, Cardinals 8
After a scoreless first innings, the Cardinals got on the board in the second after DH Luke Duffy homered to center to give Fisher the 1-0 lead. Immediately following the home run, SS Nick Lemire reached on an error. The error was costly as CF Jack Migliore doubled down the line, allowing Lemire to score and giving the Cardinals a 2-0 lead.

The Cardinals tacked on two more runs on four hits in the top of the third courtesy of another RBI for Duffy and a run-scoring single for Lemire.

The 4-0 advantage held until the bottom of the fourth, when a bases-loaded walk to the Sea Gulls got them on the board. The rally from the Sea Gulls was supported by two walks, an error, and a hits batter. McHugh finished the fourth inning, ending his day allowing four hits and an earned run, walking four and striking out two.

The score stayed at 4-1 until the top of the seventh, where a home run from 3B Noah Campanelli helped Fisher plate two more, on the third RBI of the game for Duffy and the second of the contest for Lemire.

The six run lead did not hold for long, as the Sea Gulls used extra base hits to plate two more, shrinking the deficit to four. The inning featured two runs on three hits for Salisbury, and the inning ended on called third strike.

While Fisher scored a run in the eighth in response, a five-run inning from the Sea Gulls in the bottom of the eighth knotted the score at 8-8. Salisbury pieced together five hits in the inning, ultimately stranding two runners on base.

The Sea Gulls completed their comeback with a walk-off walk, stunning the Cardinals.

In relief of McHugh, the Cardinals bullpen allowed seven earned runs, across 4.0 innings pitched, striking out five and walking three.

Sea Gulls 13 , Cardinals 1
The Sea Gulls jumped ahead in the second game of the day, courtesy of a three-run home run in the bottom of the first. While the Cardinals plated one on a Campanelli single in the third, Salisbury responded by adding two more of their own in the bottom half, bringing their lead to 7-1.

While Fisher held on for the next few innings, a grand slam in the seventh inning, as part of a five-run seventh, helped solidify the contest for the Sea Gulls.

The Cardinals managed four hits in the loss, leaving seven runners on base.

The Cardinals used seven pitchers in the loss, with none of them pitching more than 2.0 innings. The Cardinals staff allowed the 13 runs to score on 11 hits and seven walks, striking out just four in the loss.

Fisher will look to rebound during their trip to Auburndale, Florida next week, beginning on Sunday, March 5 and continuing through Sunday, March 12.
