ONEONTA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University women's basketball team opened conference play with a win on Friday, beating the Hartwick College Hawks, 75-61.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 35-24 halftime lead, but then saw their cushion cut to as little as three when the Hawks closed to 51-48 11 seconds into the fourth quarter. Fisher outscored Hartwick 24-13 the rest of the way to ultimately take home the 14-point victory.
Junior guard Sidney Tomasso led the way for the Cardinals with 20 points and nine rebounds on the night, adding two assists, two steals, and a block to the stat sheet as well. Fellow junior Katie Moravec and freshman forward Joleen Lusk had 14 points each, with Moravec leading the team in assists with five. Sophomore Presleigh Brunner had 13 points and a team-high four steals, and senior Claire Kruszka notched 12 points and seven rebounds.
The Cardinals were 26-for-59 from the field and 18-for-22 from the charity stripe.
The victory is the Cardinals' first road win of the season- all previous wins came at home or at neutral sites.
The Cardinals continue their first stint of Empire 8 play on Saturday, when they travel to Albany to face the Sage Gators. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
