Late Kate Rachwal Header Sends Women’s Soccer To E8 Final

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – A last-minute header by junior Kate Rachwal propelled the No. 2 seeded St. John Fisher University women's soccer team over No. 6 seed Alfred on Wednesday in the Empire 8 Conference Semifinal, 1-0.

Rachwal's goal, her third of the season, came with less than fifty seconds remaining in the game, directly off of a corner kick by junior Emma Spelman. The score finally broke a scoreless draw that had persisted despite Fisher outshooting Alfred 15-2 in the match. It was also Spelman's team-leading ninth assist.

The Cardinals had several chances to score before Rachwal broke through, with junior Riley Grimm leading the way with eight shots, including six on-goal. Spelman also had a near-goal, hitting one off the post late in the 81st minute.

Sophomore Avery Byrnes was perfect in net, making one save.

The Cardinals now have a chance to win their first-ever Empire 8 title in Women's Soccer, traveling down the street to face No. 1 seeded Nazareth University in the championship game. The time of the game has yet to be announced.
