Cardinals Comeback To Defeat Bengals In Five Sets

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University women's volleyball team were at home on Friday and kicked off their weekend with a matchup against Buffalo State University. The Cardinals came back from being down 2-1 to defeat the Bengals in five including a thrilling 28-26 fourth set win. It moves Fisher to a 9-8 overall record heading into the weekend.

After dropping the first set 25-22, the Cardinals had to fight in the second to avoid a 2-0 deficit. The team fell behind 7-3, but kills by Delayne Young, Kristen McIntosh and Kaylene Noble helped even the score at 9-9. The Bengals answered back and claimed a 23-19 lead late in the frame, however Buff State mistakes along with kills by Ana Gutman and Young sparked a 6-0 run to win the set and even the match.

In the fourth set, the team found themselves down 2-1 in the match and 19-14 in the set. After a timeout, the team began their push to even the score. Kills by McIntosh and Gutman, along with a service ace by Brooke Segars, helped tie the match at 19-19 before another ace at the end of the rum put the team in front 22-19. The two teams began to go back-and-forth for a few points, but Adeline Phillips and Noble executed back-to-back kills to take the set 28-26.

The fifth set was a story of runs that began with Fisher jumping ahead 4-2. The Bengals answered to take the lead at 5-4 and 7-5, but the Cardinals began to take control thanks to kills by Noble and Gutman. Before Buffalo State could respond, Fisher came out of a timeout and wrapped up the set and the match.

Noble tallied a season and career high 22 kills on a .327 hitting percentage. She also aided the defense with 14 digs. Morrow was the distributer for the team and secured 46 assists and on defense Segars recorded 18 digs, with Kiera Hartpence adding 16 of her own.

The Cardinals head to Wells College next on Saturday, Oct. 7 to take on University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg at 3 p.m. and the hosts Wells at 5 p.m.
