PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University men's soccer team were at home on Wednesday and took on Alfred University in a tough Empire 8 Conference matchup. Fisher was able to comeback in the second half to secure the 4-3 victory, and move their record to 3-4-3 and 2-0-1 in conference games.
The Cardinals used this matchup as their Mental Health Awareness Game. Fisher partnered with Athlete 2 Athlete to promote strong mental health among student-athletes.
The first half was eventful, as the two teams combined for five goals in the opening 45 minutes. The Cardinals struck first in the fourth minute, with
Riley Rease taking advantage of a goalie miscue to put the team ahead 1-0. Rease struck again in the 22
nd minute after a deflected ball found him at the top of the box and he was able to get it by the keeper to go ahead 2-0. The Saxons answered back, scoring three unanswered goals to go in front 3-2 going into the break.
The second half was quiet for the opening 25 minutes of action, but
Tim Brown took advantage of a penalty shot in the 74
th minute to even the score at 3-3. Five minutes later,
Parker Hotchkiss fired a shot by the keeper after a perfect pass by Rease. The goal proved to be the game winner as the Cardinals withstood the Saxons attack and secured the victory.
Fisher will be at home again on Saturday, Oct. 7 when they welcome Utica University to campus for a conference matchup. Kick-off is slated for 4 p.m. at Growney Stadium.
