PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University men's soccer team clinched a share of the regular season title and a first-round bye in the Empire 8 tournament with a 1-0 victory over arch-rival Nazareth University.
The win was brought about thanks to a header by junior Riley Rease in the 52nd minute, assisted by senior Matt Gentile.
The victory ensured that the Cardinals finished with a 5-0-3 record in conference play, identical to Elmira. Although Elmira took the top spot in the conference thanks to tie-breakers, Fisher will still have a bye into the second round of the tournament.
Senior Jadon Schlierf had his fifth complete-game shutout of the season, making nine saves and keeping the Cardinals ahead despite the Flyers outshooting them, 15-10.
The Cardinals will face the winner of Saturday's game between Alfred and Nazareth in the Empire 8 semifinal on next Wednesday, Nov. 1. Game time has yet to be determined.
