Men’s Soccer Advances To Empire 8 Final On Penalty Kicks

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University men's soccer team defeated the Alfred Saxons on penalty kicks Wednesday night at Growney Stadium in the Empire 8 Conference Tournament Semi-Finals.

The 5-3 shootout victory came after the two sides remained scoreless through the full time of the match and then two overtime periods. The No.2-seeded Fisher outshot No.6 Alfred, 16-5, but could not get in the net during regular play.

Graduate student Parker Hotchkiss, junior Jacob McGinnis, and sophomore Reese Powers each made their shots to begin the shootout but were matched by the first two shooters for Alfred. Then, senior goalkeeper Jadon Schlierf stopped Alfred's William Moore to put Fisher ahead, 3-2.

Seniors Joey Avallone and Ryan Brown then finished the shootout and the game by making their shots for Fisher, with Brown's goal sealing it for good.

Schlierf made one save in regulation for the win.

With the win, the Cardinals advance to the Empire 8 Finals on Saturday at Elmira College. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 P.M. at Elmira's Campus Field. The Cardinals will have an opportunity to win their third Empire 8 title ever, and their first since the 2020 season, played in the Spring of 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
