PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University field hockey team took hold of first place in the Empire 8 on Saturday, beating Hartwick 2-1 at Growney Stadium on the team's annual Senior Day.
The Cardinals, now 5-0 in conference play, beat the previously undefeated-in-conference Hawks on the strength of two goals in the third quarter. The first came from freshman
Mary Kate McPhee, who scored her seventh goal of the season on an assist from junior
Emma Cooper in the game's 39th minute.
Sam Choate, who was celebrating her Senior Day, added the second score for Fisher a few minutes later off an assist from junior
Selena Emery.
Hartwick attempted a comeback in the fourth quarter with a goal by Ashley Tricarico, but senior goalkeeper
Sophia Trozzi held the Fisher lead, making seven saves on the day. Senor
Rileigh Luste also aided in the close with a defensive save.
The Cardinals, who have already clinched a spot in the conference tournament, will look to continue their unbeaten Empire 8 schedule when they host arch-rival Nazareth University on Wednesday, Oct. 25, at 4:00 P.M. at Growney Stadium.
