PITTSFORD, N.Y. – A three-goal fourth quarter gave the St. John Fisher University field hockey team the 5-3 win over arch-rival Nazareth University on Wednesday at Growney Stadium.
The win keeps the Cardinals in the driver's seat for the top seed in the Empire 8 tournament. They currently sit first at 6-0 with just a game against Houghton remaining
The Cardinals opened the scoring in the eighth minute, when senior Sam Choate scored off an assist from Audrey Grieb to make it 1-0. The Flyers struck back early in the second quarter to make it 1-1, a score that held into halftime. Fisher pulled ahead by two in the second half, with freshman Mary Kate McPhee scoring in the third quarter before assisting on a sophomore Lily Humphrey goal in the 51st minute to make it 3-1. Nazareth, however, again staged a comeback, scoring twice in a two-minute span in the fourth quarter to even the game at 3-3.
McPhee put Fisher ahead for good less than a minute after Nazareth equalized, and Humphrey scored again to make it 5-3 soon after, sending Fisher to the win.
The Cardinals outshot the Flyers, 32-3, on the day.
Grieb had three assists on the day, while sophomore Morgan Gregory had one. Junior Senja Matson and senior Sophia Trozzi split time in goal.
The Cardinals finish their regular season on Saturday, Oct. 28, at Houghton. Game time is scheduled for 3:00 P.M. A win will ensure a first place finish for the Empire 8 regular season, while other results could lead to potential tiebreaker scenarios.
