PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University women's volleyball team were at home on Thursday to take on Houghton University. After a 3-0 sweep over the Empire 8 foes, the Cardinals secured a spot in the conference playoffs. Their record now stands at 15-8 and 6-0 in E8 play.
The first set was the most competitive out of the three, with Houghton jumping out in front 4-2 early on before the two teams traded points. Fisher claimed the lead after a pair of errors by the Highlanders and then kicked off a 6-1 run. They used kills by
Kristen McIntosh,
Reilly Morrow,
Ana Gutman and
Kaylene Noble to take an 18-12 advantage. Houghton made a couple of runs late, but kills by
Delayne Young went along with opponent errors to secure the set 25-20.
In the second frame, it started off even at 6-6. The Cardinals kicked into gear and went on a 14-1 run to jump ahead 20-7. The points were spread out with
Madalyn Bouton, Young and McIntosh all recording kills to go along with Highlander errors. Morrow wrapped up the set with a couple of kills. Fisher continued their momentum in the third set, jumping out to a 9-1 lead thanks to a trio of service aces by
Brooke Segars. Houghton fought back to cut the score to 16-15, but after some adjustments the Cardinals were able to get back on track. Kills by Young put the team back up by five, and a combinations of Noble and Bouton finished the set and the match.
Young led the way with 13 kills on a .524 hitting percentage, to go along with seven digs. Noble concluded the evening with 10 kills and nine digs. Morrow was involved all over the court, recording three kills, 28 assists and 11 digs.
The Cardinals will have a bit of a break, as they do not play again until Friday, Oct. 27. They will be at home for a 7 p.m. matchup against Utica University.
