PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University women's volleyball team were at home on Friday to take on Utica University and the Cardinals took care of business, earning the 3-0 win. They hold a record of 16-8 overall and 7-0 in Empire 8 competition.
The first set got off to a competitive start, with the score tied at 7-7 before Fisher went on a run. Kills by
Delayne Young and
Ana Gutman sparked a 11-0 run, and gave the team control at 18-7. The two teams traded scores, but a service ace by
Kiera Hartpence and a kill by Young, secured the 25-12 victory.
In the second set, the Cardinals continued their momentum thanks to kills by
Kaylene Noble and Young to jump in front 11-7. The Pioneers fought back to even the score at 13-13, but kills by
Kristen McIntosh, Gutman and Noble extended the advantage to 21-15. Utica rallied back to within one, but two more kills by Noble helped push the team to a 25-21 win.
The Pioneers were the ones that came out hot in the third set, claiming one point leads until Fisher tied it at 9-9. Kills by Young and
Reilly Morrow put the team ahead and later, it was a strike by
Olivia Nellis that kicked off a 7-0 run that gave the Cardinals a 21-13 advantage. The cruised to the end and a kill by Gutman secured the set and match victory.
Morrow set up the offense with 41 assists and the beneficiaries were Noble with 14 kills and Young with 12 kills. The two outside hitters also contributed defensively, with Noble tallying six digs and two block assists, while Young went for 11 digs and two block assists of her own. The middle blocker duo of Nellis and Gutman combined for 15 kills.
Up next for the Cardinals is the final Empire 8 match of the year in a tri-match on Saturday, Oct. 28. Fisher will host Keuka College at 11 a.m., before later taking on Misericordia University at 3 p.m.
