PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University women's volleyball team competed in a non-conference game against SUNY Morrisville on Tuesday and swept passed the Mustangs, 3-0. The Cardinals now hold a ten game win streak that helps them hold a 14-8 overall record.
Fisher got off to a fast start in the first set, with kills by
Kaylene Noble and
Ana Gutman giving the team an early lead before going on a 6-0 run to go in front 12-5. After a quick back-and-forth, the Cardinals went on another 5-0 run to extend the advantage to 19-8. Noble later secured the 25-16 set win off of a
Delayne Young assist.
In the second set, Fisher once again started hot, going in front 8-2, but this time Morrisville battled back to even the score at 19-19. The teams traded points again and the Mustangs grabbed their first lead of the set at 23-22. Back-to-back kills by Young helped the team reclaim the lead and after Morrisville tied the game at 24-24, a kill by Gutman and opponent error secured the set for Fisher.
In the third frame, it was the Mustangs that came out firing, jumping out to a 10-4 lead on the Cardinals. Fisher began their comeback with kills by
Kristen McIntosh and Young to bring the team within three. Moments later, kills by Noble and Gutman brought the deficit to 13-11. After a back and forth, and Fisher down 17-15, the Cardinals went on an incredible 10-0 run to secure the win. The run started with a kill by Young and back-to-back kills by McIntosh to put the team in front 18-17. A trio of errors by the Mustangs along with a trio of aces by
Kiera Hartpence combined to grab the victory.
Gutman impressed with 12 kills on a .611 hitting percentage to lead the team with 13.0 points. Noble added ten kills of her own, along with 12 digs on the defensive side.
Reilly Morrow tallied 36 assists with two kills and Hartpence led the way with 14 digs and three service aces.
Up next for Fisher is another home game on Thursday, Oct. 19 as they take on Houghton University at 7 p.m. with a chance to clinch a spot in the Empire 8 Conference playoffs.
