Cardinals Upset Top Seeded Hawks To Advance To Championship Game

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University women's tennis team competed in the semi-final round of the Empire 8 Women's Tennis Championship on Friday. The no. 4 seeded Cardinals took on the no. 1 seeded Hartwick College and jumping out to a 3-0 lead, Fisher held on to defeat the Hawks 5-4 and advance to the Championship Game.

All three double matches were close and competitive, but Fisher was able to secure all three victories. Maddy Langley and Kathryn Strait won the first doubles by a score of 8-6 and then the duos of Eliana Kelly/Abby Garvey and Madison Galvin/Lilly Renzi won their respective matches 8-5.

The Hawks battled back to win the first two singles matches, but Lilly Renzi defeated her opponent 6-0, 6-1 to put Fisher ahead 4-2, with three singles left to play. After Hartwick earned another win, it was Abby Garvey who earned the deciding match, winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-0.

The Cardinals await the winner between no. 2 Alfred University and no. 3 Nazareth University to see who they play on Saturday, Oct. 14 for the Championship game.
