HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University women's tennis team competed in the semi-final round of the Empire 8 Women's Tennis Championship on Friday. The no. 4 seeded Cardinals took on the no. 1 seeded Hartwick College and jumping out to a 3-0 lead, Fisher held on to defeat the Hawks 5-4 and advance to the Championship Game.
All three double matches were close and competitive, but Fisher was able to secure all three victories.

Kathryn Strait won the first doubles by a score of 8-6 and then the duos of
Eliana Kelly/
Abby Garvey and
Madison Galvin/
Lilly Renzi won their respective matches 8-5.
The Hawks battled back to win the first two singles matches, but
Lilly Renzi defeated her opponent 6-0, 6-1 to put Fisher ahead 4-2, with three singles left to play. After Hartwick earned another win, it was
Abby Garvey who earned the deciding match, winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-0.
The Cardinals await the winner between no. 2 Alfred University and no. 3 Nazareth University to see who they play on Saturday, Oct. 14 for the Championship game.
