PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher Women's Track and Field team traveled to Nazareth College to compete in the Nazareth Conference Challenge Cup. The meet took place on Saturday and was hosted by Nazareth College. The women placed third out of ten teams as a team, and third as a conference.
Head Coach,
Mike Henchen, had this to say, "The Conference Challenge is a unique meet where two teams from different conferences are pitted against each other. For example, we team up with Nazareth to represent the E8 Conference".
Additionally, he stated, "Coming into this week, the women's team is 25th on the National Rankings. Given the tremendous performances at this week, we should make a nice step up into the top 25th team in the nation".
The women had 24 performances that moved them up the E8 qualifying list.
On the Track
The 5000m women started the day strong, with
Riley Corey running 18:45.89 to place 3rd, qualifying for the Empire 8 Championship meet, the All-Atlantic Regional meet, and currently leads the Empire 8.
Lauren DeMichele had a near identical race, finishing 4th with a time of 18:48.54 to also qualify for the conference and regional championship meets.
Ciarra Franz had a strong performance in the 60m hurdles, finishing 5
th with a time of 9.10. Her mark qualifies her for the AARTFC meet, as well as furthering her lead atop the Empire 8 leaderboard. Additionally, her performance currently puts her at 25
th in the nation.
Franz continued her strong performance into the 60m, placing 3
rd in the first round with a time of 8.01.
Zhane Lettsome also had a strong performance, running 8.09, a PR, in the first round and qualifying for the AARTFC meet, placing 7
th in the finals.
Isabelle Rowley,
Maria Covelli, and
Allison Lennebacker all had PRs.
Samantha Shea had a strong 400m performance, running 59.27 to place 2
nd. Grace Wright was right behind Shea, running 1:01.44 to place 6
th.
In the 800m
Riley Jameson qualified for the Empire 8 Championship meet, running 2:36.66, a personal best.
Lettsome continued her success into the 200m, running 26.98 to place 8
th.
Michaela Kurbs also had a strong performance, running 27.31 to qualify for the Empire 8 Championship meet. Lettsome, Lennbacker,
Paige Lundgren, and Jalina Charemagne all had PRs.
In the 3000m,
Audrey Carragher qualified for the Empire 8 Championship meet, running 12:10.51.
Caitlin Voloshen,
Sabrina Antonini, and
Lauren Almy all had PRs.
The Cardinals ended the track meet with the team of G. Wright,
Emma Wright,
Brenda Le, and Shea placing 2
nd in the 4x400m, running 4:06.27 to qualify for the AARTFC meet. The 4x400m team moves up to 1
st place on the Empire 8 leaderboard, after their performance. Additionally, this performance puts the relay team as the 25
th best in the nation.
In the Field
Makenna King had a strong performance in the weight throw, throwing 14.02m, a personal best by one meter, to place 5
th. This performance also puts her at 4
th on the Empire 8 leaderboard.
King's success continued into the shot put, throwing 11.08m to place 6
th, with
Erin McGuinness throwing 10.60m to place 10
th.
The long jump saw two top-three performances, with
Veronica Duell jumping 5.62m to take 1
st place and Kurbs jumping 5.55m to place 3
rd. Duell's jump broke Fisher's indoor long jump school record, broke the Nazareth facility record, and currently stands as the 4
th best mark in the nation. Kurbs jump was just as impressive, leaving her tied at 5
th in the nation.
Claudia Vogel jumped 4.59m to qualify for the Empire 8 Championship meet.
In the triple jump, Covelli jumped 10.39m to place 10
th.
Next up for the Cardinals is the Brockport – Multi Invite hosted by SUNY Brockport on Friday, Feb. 3 and Saturday, Feb. 4.
