ALFRED, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher University men's basketball team traveled to Alfred University Saturday to take on the Saxons. At the end of regulation, the Cardinals fell short by a score of 82-71. Fisher now stands at 12-6 overall and are 8-3 in conference play. Alfred moves to 14-5 overall and are 9-3 in conference play.
Daniel Cook started out the scoring for Fisher, off an offensive rebound he converted to a jump shot. The Saxon's had a quick start and gained an early lead on the Cardinals. Ryan Gentile made both free throw attempts to close the defect to just three points. Fisher continued to hang on, Connor Recore and Jack Foley tallied two points each in 20 seconds to keep the score close, 13-21 with 11 minutes to go. As the first half was closing out the Cardinals started to gain momentum. Foley, Joe Morrell and Brendan McRoy added to this push, cutting the deficit to just three going into halftime, down by a score of 35-38. This run was led by Cook, he tallied the last five points of the half for Fisher.
Foley sunk a three point shot to get the Cardinals up and running at the start of the second half. Cook was fouled going hard to the basket and converted on a three-point play to make the score 42-49 with 13 minutes to go. Alfred answered back and hung onto the lead. Trailing by 12, Akinlana Popoola finished on both free throw attempts to chip away. Gentile created an opportunity for himself off a steal on the defensive end, converting it to two points. Gentile and Cook combined had the last 16 points for the Cardinals, but it was not enough. After 40 minutes the Cardinals fell short by a score of 82-71.
Cook finished the night with 38 points, nine rebounds, and went 10-for-13 on free throw attempts. Gentile had 11 points, three rebounds and went 7-for-8 on free throw attempts. Foley finished with seven points and nine rebounds.
Up next for the Cardinals, they will travel to Keuka College on Tuesday, Jan. 31st. The Empire 8 match up is set to start at 7:30pm.
