Men’s Basketball Dominates in Road Win Over Elmira

ELMIRA, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher University mens basketball team competed on the road against Elmira College on Friday night. The team came out on top after 40 minutes by a final score of 96-73. The Cardinals overall record stands at 12-5 and are 8-2 in the conference. The Soaring Eagles fall to 3-14 on the season and are now 2-7 in conference play.

Jack Foley got the scoring started for the Cardinals with a three-point basket, assisted by Ryan Gentile. Connor Recore recorded a steal that led him to convert on two free throw attempts. Gentile finished on a layup off a steal to bring the Cardinal lead to 10-0 at the 17:52 minute mark. The Soaring Eagles started to chip away at the gap bringing the score to 10-8 in one minute. A steal from Gentile was pushed in transition and dunked by Cook on the other end, making the score 19-12 with 14 minutes to go. The game stayed close as the Soaring Eagles continued to fight back, tying the game up at 22 a piece with nine minutes left. The Cardinals began to pull away with six minutes to go. Recore recorded a defensive rebound, converting it to two points on the other end, off an assist by Cook. The half ended with a jump shot by Cook, assisted by Foley to go into halftime with a lead of 45-32.

Coming out of halftime, Cook had the first basket, finishing on a layup assisted by Foley. The Cardinals scored 10 straight points to bring the lead to 57-34 just five minutes in. Brad Fowler got on the scoreboard by going hard to the basket, getting fouled, and converting on both free throw attempts to put the Cardinals up by 23. Matt Lettko added to Fisher's second half momentum by adding a layup of his own. At the 10:57 minute mark, Eric Kegler brought the Cardinals up by 28 points with a layup, it was their biggest lead of the night so far. With three minutes to go Joe Morrell sunk a three point shot off an assist from Akinlana Popoola. The Cardinals largest lead of the game was 32 points and after time ran out, Fisher won by a final score of 96-73.

Cook finished with 19 points, seven rebounds, four assists and went 50% on field goals. Recore had 15 points, five rebounds, one assist and went 6-for-10 on field goals. Foley ended the night with 14 points, six rebounds, four assists, and went 100% on three point shots.

Up next for the Cardinals, they will travel to Alfred University on Saturday, Jan. 28th. The Empire 8 match up is set to start at 4pm.
