Shea Takes First in 400m as Women Compete at Spartan Invitational

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher Women's Track and Field team traveled to Ocean Breeze, Staten Island, N.Y. to compete in the Spartan Invitational. The meet took place on Friday and was hosted by St. Thomas Aquinas College.

Head Coach, Mike Henchen, had this to say, regarding the women's performances, "The women returned from break focused and ready to compete. They had 17 new or improved E8 qualifying performances".

The 3000m run saw Laura Witt take fifth place with a time of 10:45.79, earning a qualifying time for the Empire 8 Championships. Riley Corey was not too far behind, taking sixth place with a time of 10:50.06, another Empire 8 qualifying time. Lauren DeMichele was also a part of this pack, running 10:59.50, taking eighth place, and qualifying for the Empire 8 Championships. Brigid McGee (11:36.30), Audrey Carragher (12:11.23), and Abigail Perry (12:11.80) all ran qualifying times, as well. "Witt, Corey, and DeMichele had tremendous performances in the 3k with all now taking 3 of the top 4 spots on top of the E8 qualifying leaderboard while also making the qualifying time for the prestigious Boston College Valentine Classic next month," said Coach Henchen.

The 4x200m relay team of Ashley Holt, Paige Lundgren, Hayly Fredrickson, and Lily Rexford took seventh place with a time of 1:59.58.

In the mile, Caitlin Voloshen ran 5:48.16, a season-best that also qualified her for the Empire 8 Championships.

Next up was the 400m run, which saw Samantha Shea take first place with a time of 58.93. Grace Wright also claimed a top-ten finish, taking tenth in a time of 1:01.90. Emma Wright (1:03.14) and Hayly Fredrickson (1:06.90), her all-time PR, both ran qualifying times for the Empire 8 Championships.

In the 800m run, Riley Jameson ran an Empire 8 qualifying mark with a time of 2:37.67, which is an all-time and college PR.

Coach Henchen discussed the women's 200m performances, "Zhane Lettsome and Lilyan Humphrey had PRs and E8 qualifying performances in the 200. They are now second and fourth on the E8 qualifying list". Grace Wright also ran an Empire 8 qualifying time of 27.53. Isabelle Rowley (28.27), E. Wright (28.35), and Ciarra Franz (28.35) all ran qualifying times, as well.

The long jump saw Veronica Duell take home a fourth-place finish with a jump of 5.40m. Michaela Kurbs had an identical jump, taking fifth place with a jump of 5.40m. "Duell and Kurbs finished 4^th and 5^th overall in a field of D1 and DII athletes", stated Coach Henchen.

In the weight throw, Jazelle McIntyre threw an Empire 8 qualifying mark of 10.17m. "Kenna King and Jazelle McIntyre had terrific PRs in the weight throw with Jazelle's throw a ½ meter PR", stated Coach Henchen.
