Volleyball Open 2022 With Victory

BALTIMORE, MD – The St. John Fisher University women's volleyball team are on the road this weekend as the travel to Johns Hopkins University for the Greg Giovanazzi Memorial Invite. The kicked off the competition with a battle against Marymount University and were victorious, 3-1. The win propels them to 1-0 on the year, while the Saints fall to 0-1.
 
Three Straight
 
The Cardinals dropped the opening set 25-23, but they showed that they were not going to go easy, mounting multiple comebacks. They took control early in the second set, going ahead 10-3. Marymount fought back to get within a couple points, but Fisher earned three straight points to claim the set 25-19. The third frame saw a similar lead build, with the Cardinals jumping in front 10-2. The Saints once again clawed back within three points, however the team won the set 25-17. In the fourth set, it was Fisher who fell behind against Marymount, trailing 13-7. Kaitlyn Doyle got things back on track with three service aces and the team took advantage of three errors by the opposition to tie the set at 13-13. The Cardinals were once against down late in the frame, trailing 20-18, before back-to-back Saints errors let Fisher back in. They took advantage of the opportunity by collected four straight points before a service error by the opposition ended the match.
 
Match Stats
 
Delayne Young led the way with 13 kills and Kiana Walker finished the day with ten. Katie Leaty tallied 31 assists in the match. As a team, Fisher had 14 serve aces, 10 block assists and Olivia Nellis had the teams only solo block.
 
Up Next
 
Volleyball continues the invite today with a double-header. They begin at 10 a.m. against Stevens who fell to the hosts Johns Hopkins the night prior. Fisher will then battle the Blue Jays at 12:30 to wrap up the weekend.
