PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University women's soccer team were at home on Saturday to take on Hartwick College. The University was celebrating Alumni Weekend and in front of a crowd of Cardinals past and present, the team was able to secure a 1-0 win. Fisher now holds a record of 3-1-3, while the Hawks remain winless at 0-4-2.
The first half was a defensive battle, as the two teams totaled just three shots each and no goals.
Tori Cruz took the first chance of the game in the third minute, but the shot went wide right of the goal. In the 15th minute, Cruz once again took her chance on goal and it was fired right at the goalie who made the saving catch. The final chance of the first half came off the foot of
Siobhan McMakin. She took her chance from outside of the box, but a Hawks defender got in the way and blocked the ball from getting near the net.
In the second half, the Cardinals immediately took advantage of a corner kick.
Emma Spelman set up the ball and lobbed the ball into the box and it allowed
Kate Rachwal to get into position and head the ball past the goalie and into the back of the net for the 1-0 advantage. A majority of the second half following the goal became a defensive battle with neither unit tallying a shot on goal until the 73rd minute. Fisher was able to hold on for their first Empire 8 victory of the year.
Up next for the Cardinals is an Empire 8 road game against Houghton College on Saturday, Oct. 1. The match is set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
