HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- The St. John Fisher University women's soccer team dominated on both sides of the ball as they defeated Houghton College 2-0 on Saturday afternoon. With the win, they move to 4-1-3 and 2-0 in Empire 8 conference games. The Highlanders fall to 4-4-2 and 1-1 in E8 play.
This marks the second straight shutout win for the Cardinals.
Fisher had the opportunity to score in the first half, with five shots, four of which were on goal. The first opportunity came on the foot of
Tori Cruz who forced a goalie save with her attempt.
Jackie Gervais added two attempts on net of her own that were covered up by the goal keeper. The first half included seven corner kicks from Fisher, two which came from sophomore
Emma Spelman.
Defense told the story of the first 45 minutes for the Cardinals, as Houghton finished with four shots, and three were on goal. First year goalie Avery Brynes kept Houghton off the board and it is the fifth time in eight games that Byrnes and the Cardinals have shutout an opponent. In comparison, last season, the Cardinals had five shutouts over 17 games.
The Cardinals got on the board in the 65th minute on a goal from
Emma Osterhoudt, with an assist coming from Cruz. The goal from Osterhoudt is her second this season, with the other one coming against Fredonia. Last season, Osterhoudt totaled three goals over five games. With two goals this season, Osterhoudt ties
Grace Wolsieffer for the team lead.
A second goal came under a minute later from
Jenn Kirker and it gave the Cardinals the 2-0 edge. The shot from Kirker was assisted by
Kate Rachwal. The defense of the Cardinals matched the success of the offense in the second half, by not allowing a single shot.
Fisher returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 4 against Rochester Institute of Technology. It will be a 4 p.m. home game at Growney Stadium.
