UTICA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University women's volleyball team were on the road on Friday to take on Utica University in the first Empire 8 contest of the season. The Cardinals were victorious in straight sets and now hold a record of 6-4 and 1-0 in conference, while the Pioneers fall to 7-6 and 0-1 in E8 play.
Fisher took immediate control in the first set, going ahead 4-0. After a few points by the Pioneers, the Cardinals began a run starting with kills by
Katie Leaty and
Lindsey DeBonis.
Delayne Young continued the run with a service ace before
Olivia Nellis tallied her first kill of the set. They continued to dominate and secured the set, 25-12. The impressive play did not stop in the second frame. With Leaty serving, Fisher kicked off the frame with a 5-0 run, and later the used another run of points to pull ahead 15-5. The set eventually ended with Fisher ahead 25-13. The start of the third was competitive, until the Cardinals used two separate runs of four and five points to take a 14-5 advantage.
Emily Brochey ended the set and the match with the service ace.
Leaty was the key distributer with 14 assists to go along with seven digs. DeBonis was the kill leader with nine,
Sydney French was next with six.
Kiana Walker finished the match with eight digs and Young and
Kiera Hartpence joined Leaty with seven digs of their own.
