Cardinals Compete At Home Against Hawks

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University field hockey team hosted SUNY New Paltz at Growney Stadium Saturday morning. The two teams were aggressive all game and totaled 27 shots, 23 of which were shots on goal. The Cardinals fell by a final score of 5-3 and now hold a record of 0-3, while the Hawks shift to 3-0.

Fisher had a variety of opportunities to open the game, with Gianna Palma's shot getting blocked at the 5:42 mark. She later had another shot that was saved by the Hawks goalie. A minute later, Molly Fisher's attempt went just wide of the goal. In the second frame, Palma was called upon to take the penalty kick and converted with an absolute rocket for her first of the season. This evened the score at 1-1 four minutes into the second quarter. With a minute left in the first half, Emma Cooper score her first goal of the season to cut the Cardinal deficit to just one goal.

In the opening few minutes of the second half, Palma took advantage of a well-placed pass from Audrey Grieb on the penalty corner. Another hard hit shot got passed the goalkeeper and everything was tied up at 3-3. Morgan Flatley had an opportunity to put the team ahead with five minutes left in the third quarter, but the opponent's goalie got the save. In the fourth, the Cardinals had two good opportunities to find an equalizer. The first was with ten minutes left in regulation and an attempt by Palma was saved, the next was a minute later when Molly Fisher had her shot stopped by the goalie as well.

The field hockey team are on the road for their next contest. They will travel to SUNY Geneseo on Wednesday, Sept. 14 for a 4 p.m. matchup.
