BUFFALO, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University men's soccer team began their season on the road and were involved in a physical battle against Buffalo State. The two teams combined for 18 fouls, seven yellow cards and two red cards. As the dust settled, the Cardinals fell by a 3-1 final. The Cardinals begin the year with a 0-1 record, while the Bengals shift to 1-0.
The Cardinals were outshot 6-3 in the first half, but they kept a lid on the Bengals attack for the first 39 minutes. The opposition was able to convert on a well taken free-kick and scored the opening goal at in the 41
st minute. In the 66th minute, Fisher tied the game thanks to
Brennan Brown. Unfortunately it was a short lived celebration, as Buffalo State reclaimed the advantage less than a minute later. In the final minute of the match, a foul by the Cardinals gave the Bengals a penalty kick to ice the game, 3-1.
The men's soccer team remain on the road on Saturday, when they head to SUNY Geneseo for a 1 p.m. match. The home opener for the Cardinals will be on Wednesday, Sept. 7 as they host SUNY Brockport for a game under the lights.
