CORTLAND, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher College women's track and field team competed in numerous middle-distance races and field events on the first day of the 2022 Red Dragon Open and Multi, hosted by SUNY Cortland.

Several Cardinals ran in the 800- and 1,500-meter races, in addition to the pole vault, hammer throw, high jump, and heptathlon.

In the 800, Taylor Highers paced Fisher with a fourth-place finish and a time of 2:26.72. In her first-ever collegiate 800-meter race, sophomore Laura Witt was clocked at 2:33.33, good enough for ninth. Alivia Collins (2:36.51), Angelea Collins (2:39.79), and Morgan Gould (2:40.45) also placed inside the top 15 in 11th, 14th, and 15th, respectively.

In addition to their performances in the 800, Witt, Alivia Collins, and Gould turned in top-10 showings at 1,500 meters. Witt crossed the finish line in third place (5:07.16), outpacing Collins in fourth by 1.08 seconds (5:08.24). With a personal-record time of 5:17.45, Gould came in sixth.

Earning a bid into the All-Atlantic Region Track and Field Conference (AARTFC) Championships in the pole vault was senior Alondra Arroyo. The Central Square native surpassed 3.20 meters, tying her best collegiate result from the 2021-22 Empire 8 Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, and beat second-place Julianna Szczech of Division II Le Moyne by 0.29 meters. First-year pole vaulter Emily Frech, who was fourth in the event, managed to set a new PR at 2.46 meters for the Cardinals.

Fisher's other individual winner was senior Elizabeth Izydorczak, who took first in the hammer throw at 42.55 meters. Izydorczak, who claimed the top spot on the podium for the first time as a Cardinal, finished 0.69 meters ahead of runner-up Sarah Parr of SUNY Cortland (41.86m). Makenna King (39.76m) and Madison Jones (33.29m) also placed inside the top 10 in the hammer throw.

Through four events in the heptathlon, St. John Fisher freshman Logan Fredrickson sits third with 806 points. Fredrickson's best event on Saturday was the shot put, as the Ellicottville native took second at 8.23 meters. She placed third in the 100-meter hurdles (19.14) and high jump (1.32m).

On Sunday, Fredrickson will finish the long jump, javelin, and 800-meter dash. The rest of the St. John Fisher women's track and field team will look forward to Monday's SUNY Geneseo Invitational.
