PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Despite a pair of wins from sophomore
Jake Anthony, the St. John Fisher College men's tennis team dropped Friday evening's Empire 8 Conference match against Houghton College by a 6-3 score.
The loss marked the second in a row for the Cardinals (3-7, 1-2 Empire 8) against a conference opponent, while the Highlanders (5-10) remained unbeaten in league play at 2-0.
Anthony led Fisher to points in both doubles and singles action. The Cardinals received their only doubles victory at the No. 2 position, as Anthony and teammate
Sean Danahy took down the tandem of Levi Webb and Nolan Zach, 8-5. As a pair, Anthony and Danahy extended their undefeated streak and have now won eight consecutive matches together this season.
Singles action was highlighted by Anthony at No. 5 and
Jordan O'Connell at No. 6. The former swept Adam Brown in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, while bumping his singles record to an unblemished 10-0 on the season. O'Connell produced back-to-back 6-3 set wins over Nolan Zach and is now 6-2 overall in singles competition.
Junior
Cameron Campbell fought valiantly in the No. 4 slot opposite Houghton's Matthew Cicero. After falling 6-1 in the first set, Campbell evened the match by taking the second set, 6-3. Alas, Cicero rebounded and claimed the singles point for the Highlanders by winning the third set, 6-3.
Following a week-long break, the St. John Fisher men's tennis team will continue its Empire 8 schedule in Alfred, New York, against the Alfred University Saxons. The two teams will meet on Saturday, April 16, at 1:00 p.m.
