PITTSFORD, N.Y. – No. 5 nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse remained unbeaten in Empire 8 Conference play on Wednesday afternoon, as the Cardinals blanked Alfred University in the middle quarters en route to an 18-5 victory.
Fisher, which clinched a berth in the 2022 Empire 8 Championships, improved to 4-0 against E8 opponents and 11-2 overall on the season with its third consecutive victory. Over the past three league games, the Cardinals have been on cruise control and have outscored their opposition by a combined 78-11. Alfred fell to 8-4 overall and 2-2 within the conference with the loss.
The first quarter was well contested by both sides and ended with just a one-point margin in favor of the Cardinals, 3-2. However, the second and third quarters were anything but close as Fisher went on a tear to blow the game wide open. Fisher netted 13 unanswered goals, a rally that began when
Jacob Gallina scored at the 8:59 mark of the second quarter and lasted until 13:29 in the fourth, a span of 25:30.
Three of Fisher's tallies during the 13-0 run were scored man-up, with one apiece from
Ian Evans,
Jack Mulvihill, and
Jordan Depetres. Mulvihill's man-up goal completed a natural hat trick for the graduate from Dewitt, New York.
Mulvihill opened the scoring in the first 1:15 of the fourth quarter, displaying a perfect spin dodge with a top-shelf finish to put the Cardinals up 16-2.
Mulvihill was one of five Cardinals with multiple points and tied the team lead with six (4g-2a).
Nicholas Miller paced all players with five assists to go along with one goal and eight ground balls. Depetres logged a game-high five goals. Evans (4g) and
Jordan Leuze (1g-3a) both collected four points.
Joe Post won 16 of his 20 attempts at the faceoff dot and led all players with 14 ground balls.
Second-year goalie
Ben Hammond secured the victory with nine saves and three goals allowed in 51:04. As a unit, the Fisher defense forced the Saxons to turn the ball over 22 times and held Alfred scoreless on three man-up opportunities.
The No. 5 Cardinals are scheduled to hit the road for their penultimate regular-season contest. Fisher travels to Oneonta, New York, on Saturday, April 23, at 2:00 p.m. for an Empire 8 matchup at Hartwick College. A win over the Hawks would secure at least a share of the E8 regular-season title.
