PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's tennis team defeated Utica College, 6-3, Saturday afternoon in the team's conference opener at Mendon Racquet at Pool Club. With the win, the Cardinals improved their record to 3-5 on the season, and 1-0 in the conference, while the Pioneers moved to 1-1 overall, and 0-1 in the Empire 8.
The Cardinals took two of three matchups in doubles as
Jordan O'Connell and
Cameron Campbell came up just short in their match, falling 7-8.
Jake Anthony and
Sean Danahy avenged their teammates with an 8-7 victory of their own.
Anthony Molosag and Zach Decaro finished up doubles play with an 8-2 victory in their match.
In the six matches of singles play, Danahy 1-6, 1-6 and Molosag 6-2, 3-6, 3-6, were defeated before Gorman earned the team a third match victory 6-0, 7-5. Campbell was a winner in the fourth match after his 6-1, 6-2 match. Anthony earned his second victory of the day with a 6-0, 6-1 decision, before O'Connell finished off the day with a 6-0, 6-2 win in match six to certify the victory over the Pioneers, 6-3.
The Cardinals will be back in action at 1 p.m. on Sunday as they take on Nazareth in another Empire 8 bout.
