ROCHESTER, N.Y. – After earning just five team points after day one, the St. John Fisher College women's track and field team finished in seventh place at the All-Atlantic Region Track and Field Conference (AARTFC) Indoor Championship by posting 34 points on day two, for a total of 39 team points. The Cardinals' effort was headlined by a two new program records and a handful of personal records, as they wrapped up competition at the Golisano Training Center.
Ciarra Franz led off the day with her fourth-straight career-best performance in the 60-meter hurdles in today's final round of the race. The freshman enjoyed a 9.00 second-flat performance in the event, to best her PR by .07 seconds and earn a third-place finish in the regional championship. Her mark now stands at number 28 on the national leader board.
That outing was not to be outdone, though, as
Riley Corey took to the track for her second long distance run of the championship – the 3,000-meter run. The junior, who recorded a final time of 10:29.47 and seventh place finish, set a new personal record and Fisher program record in the event, which she was also the holder of.
In the 400-meter run,
Samantha Shea and
Gracie Wright teamed up to earn consecutive podium spots at third and fourth, respectively. Shea, a transfer senior, finished the race in 59.27 seconds, while Wright, a freshman, came up right behind her teammate with a final time of 59.68 seconds. The pair later linked up with
Emma Wright and
Breanna Lambert in the 4x200-meter relay, where the team took fourth place overall and finished in 1:47.32 – just shy of meeting the program record, which stands at 1:46.75.
Wrapping up the events on the track was senior
Taylor Highers, who posted her second-best time of the year in the mile. Her time of 5:26.10 was good for 21st place.
As for the long jump, the duo of
Michaela Kurbs and
Veronica Duell went 3-5, respectively, as both Cardinals achieved personal best marks in the event. Kurbs, a sophomore, set her career-best leap on her final attempt of the day. Her distance of 5.52 meters was just .02 meters short of breaking the Fisher program record in the event and is now the nation's 38th best. Additionally, Duell, a freshman, grabbed her PR mark of 5.44 meters on her first try at the line, as it stood as one of the day's top marks and the nation's 47th best.
In the weight throw,
Jordan Lehman snagged eighth place on a 15.39-meter heave – her career-best mark in the event – which she achieved on her fourth try of the day.
The Cardinals will now await the shakeout of the national leader board with eyes pointed towards both next weekend's NCAA Indoor Championship in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and the outdoor season which will begin later this month.
