No. 5 Men's Lacrosse Cruises to 12-7 Win at Geneseo

GENESEO, N.Y. - Hat tricks from Ian Evans and Nicholas Miller led the fifth-ranked St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team to a 12-7 victory on the road against SUNY Geneseo Wednesday night.

The win was the second in a row for the Cardinals, who improved to 7-1 overall, following a nail-biting loss to No. 1 nationally-ranked Rochester Institute of Technology on March 23. On the other hand, the Knights saw their two-game win streak come to a halt, as Geneseo fell to 3-5.

Evans, the reigning Empire 8 Conference Player of the Year, led all Fisher point-getters with a game-high five points on three goals and two assists. Miller also deposited a trio of tallies and added one helper for four points.

Jordan Depetres (2g-1a) and Timmy Salit (2g) also had multi-goal outings to propel the Cardinal offense over the Knights, while both Jordan Leuze (2a) and Jack Mulvihill (2a) handed out a pair of assists.

At the X, two-time All-American Joe Post provided another standout performance. He secured 13 victories on 22 faceoff attempts, and for the sixth time this season, grabbed double-digit ground balls with 11. Second-year netminder Ben Hammond built a sturdy wall between the pipes. The goalie from Manlius stopped nine of 16 shots on goal en route to the victory.

Fisher wasted little time before grabbing the lead, as Depetres netted his first goal just 53 seconds into the opening quarter. It was the start of a 4-0 run for the Cardinals, a rally that ended with back-to-back goals from Evans.

After the Knights trimmed the deficit back to three at 5-2, Fisher widened the gap with another four-goal run that bridged into the early minutes of the third quarter. Depetres ended scoring in the first half with only 44 seconds remaining on the clock, and Evans potted his third marker at the 12:10 mark in the third quarter to give the Cardinals their largest lead of the night, 9-2.

All three of Miller's goals came in the second half. He posted back-to-goal scores at 9:18 and 6:10 in the third to make it an 11-4 advantage, before rounding out his hat-trick with the game's last goal inside the final two minutes.

Fisher continues its two-game road trip on Saturday, April 2, when the Cardinals open Empire 8 play against East Avenue rival Nazareth. The opening faceoff versus the Golden Flyers is slated for 12:00 p.m.
