ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College baseball team was on the wrong end of a 4-0 decision on Thursday night as the Cardinals fell to the University of Rochester, 4-0, at Towers Field. With the defeat, Fisher slipped to 4-6 while the Yellowjackets, who are receiving votes in the latest D3baseball.com poll, improved to 10-1.
After stranding a pair in the top of the second inning, Fisher fell behind in the home half of the frame as Rochester scored what turned out to be the game-winning run with an RBI-single to left to hold a 1-0 lead.
The home team doubled its advantage in the bottom of the fourth with an unearned run on two hits before following suit with another run in the fifth to hold a three-run cushion.
Trailing by three in the top of the sixth, Fisher had the tying run come to the plate with one away, but the Yellowjackets would escape the jam without allowing a run to take their 3-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth.
With three runs already on the board, Rochester padded its margin with another unearned run in the sixth and held Fisher to just two base runners over the final three frames to win the cross-town showdown.
Tim Geissel (1-1) started on the hill for Fisher and was hit with the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits over 4.1 innings.
Logan Persse tossed 2.2 innings and let in an unearned run while
Cole Hedden threw a scoreless eighth inning.
Fisher will continue its three-game set with the Yellowjackets at 4 p.m. on Friday at Towers Field.
