PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Junior
Brian Norsen hit a go-ahead single in the top of the ninth to propel the St. John Fisher College baseball team to a 2-1 win over the University of Rochester on Friday afternoon at Towers Field. With the win, Fisher improved to 5-6 on the year and snapped the Yellowjackets' eight-game winning streak. Rochester, which is receiving votes in the latest D3baseball.com poll, closed out the day at 10-2 overall.
Both pitchers were dealing through five innings as neither team was able to get on the board until the top of the sixth when a leadoff double by
Ben Lavery came around to score on a costly infield error by Rochester that staked the visitors to a 1-0 edge.
The lead was short-lived, however, as the Yellowjackets drew even in the bottom of the sixth after moving a runner into scoring position before belting a run-scoring single to knot things up at 1-1.
As the game wore on, both teams kept the other at bay until the top of the ninth when
Luke Duffy worked a leadoff walk and moved to second following a sacrifice bunt by
James Murphy. Rochester would get the next hitter to fly out, but was unable to get off the field before Norsen smacked a single through the left side to plate Duffy and give the cardinals a one-run cushion.
Trailing 2-1 in the home half of the ninth, Rochester put the tying run in scoring position with a leadoff double, but was unable to break through as
Russell Dunlap pitched three straight outs to earn the win in relief.
Alec Teska gave Fisher six solid innings as the senior allowed one unearned run on three hits to go along with a pair of strikeouts. Dunlap (2-1) kept Rochester guessing over three scoreless innings and scattered just two hits in all.
Fisher collected 10 hits in the win led by Lavery who was 3-for-5 at the plate with a double while Norsen and
Nick Lemire each had two hits in the win.
Noah Campanelli, Murphy and
Michael Beimel rounded out the offense with one hit apiece.
The Cardinals will close out their three-game series with Rochester at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Towers Field.
