SALISBURY, Md. – In the team's second game during its trip to Maryland, the nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team was defeated by the No. 1 team in the nation Salisbury College, 7-15, Friday evening at Sea Gull Stadium. With the loss, Fisher, which is ranked 13th in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association poll, drops to 0-2, while the Sea Gulls move to 2-0.

After earning the first draw control of the game, the Cardinals had a chance to take a quick lead with a shot by Sydney DeGirolamo, but a Sea Gulls save led to an offensive attack. Following a Brittany Halpin yellow card, Salisbury earned a free position goal to take a 1-0 lead.

Just one minute later, the Sea Gulls took the draw control and commanded down the field for their second goal to take a 2-0 lead over the Cardinals

Trailing 0-2, the Cardinals needed to find a spark to get back in the game. Following a DeGirolamo draw control, Fisher earned an offensive attack that lead Bianca Giacona to score and close the gap to 1-2.

With nine minutes remaining in the first quarter, a Fisher turnover gave the Sea Gulls an offensive advantage, leading to a third goal for Salisbury.

Down 3-1, the Cardinals bounced right back as a draw control by Halpin allowed her to burst down the field and find the back of the net, giving putting the Cardinals back to within one.

After trading another set of goals, a foul on the Cardinals gave the Sea Gulls a free position attempt with 10 seconds remaining, but it would be unsuccessful as goalie Lilly Goodsell snagged it to end the quarter.

Still behind 4-3, the Cardinals offense earned a free position attempt following a Sea Gull penalty. Halpin was set to take the attempt and the senior earned herself a hat-trick and tied the game up 4-4.

The tie would not hold long as the Sea Gulls put two on the board over the next three minutes. With four minutes to go in the half, the Sea Gulls would put four in the net and pull away with a 4-10 lead.

Following the intermission, Salisbury would outscore Fisher 5-1 in the quarter, with the one goal coming from a free position goal by Sydney Carpenter.

Going into the fourth quarter down 10, the Cardinals needed to build a comeback for a chance to win. After forcing a Salisbury turnover, Kathleen Salanger found the back of the net to cut the deficit to nine.

With 12 minutes remaining in the game, the Cardinals earned four-straight free position attempts. After saving the first three, the Sea Gulls allowed a second goal from Carpenter to cut the lead to eight.

Trying to claw its way back, Fisher had several attempts at shots on goal, but were unable to find success. The Sea Gulls were able to slow the pace down and let the clock run down to end the game and defeat the Cardinals 15-7.

Halpin led the Cardinal offense with three goals, followed by Carpenter with two goals and Giacona and Salanger with one apiece, while Hannah King had a solid game on defense forcing three turnovers.

Goodsell moved to 0-2 after tallying eight saves and allowing 15 goals.

Hoping to bounce back, the Cardinals will return home and travel to Oswego to take on Oswego State on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
