CLEARWATER Fl. – The nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team finished its trip in Florida by routing Clark University, 21-5, on Friday at Phillip Jones Park. Fisher, which is ranked fifth in the latest United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association national poll, remains a perfect 4-0 on the season, while Clark drops to 0-4.
After a Cougars goal five minutes into the match, the Cardinals found themselves a man down after a
Matt Jeffries penalty. Clark capitalized by scoring a second goal, sending the No. 5 team in the nation trailing 0-2.
With less than five minutes to play in the quarter, Clark committed a slashing penalty to give the Cardinals a one-minute man-up. The penalty gave Fisher all the momentum it needed as
Ian Evans found
Jordan Depetres for his first of three goals in the game. A minute later
Jack Mulvihill found the back of the net assisted by
Nicholas Miller, to tie the game up 2-2.
From there, the Cardinals scored two more goals in under two minutes behind Evans and Depetres as Fisher closed out the quarter 4-2.
The Second quarter was all Fisher, as the Cardinals managed to outscore the Cougars 10-0 in 15 minutes, including four-straight goals from Evans.
In the final two minutes of play in the first half, Evans,
Logan Grom,
Jordan Leuze, and
Jake Carpenter all scored, putting Fisher up 14-2.
The Cardinals continued their momentum in the third quarter outscoring the Cougars 4-2, with goals from
Tucker O'Donnell and
Brennan O'Brien.
With 15 minutes to play, the Cardinals led 18-4, before tacking on three more goals from
Jacob Gallina,
Colin Blakeslee, and
Brady Mason, to defeat Clark 21-5.
Evans led the offense with five goals, two assists and three ground balls, followed by Depetres, Mulvihill, and Miller with four points apiece.
Joe Post won 11 of his 14 faceoffs at X, along with nine ground balls.
Ben Hammond moved to 4-0 on the year after tallying eight saves in net, and allowing just four goals, while
Brandon Moore played the fourth quarter and held down the Cougars by producing three saves and allowing one goal.
As a team, the Cardinals scored 21 on 64 shots, including a perfect 3-for-3 on man-up opportunities. Fisher forced Clark to commit 18 turnovers, and 17-of-24 clears, while going 18-of-19 themselves.
The Cardinals will fly back home and hit the road to take on No. 19 Ursinus College at 12 p.m. on Saturday March 19th, in Collegeville, PA.
