Men’s Basketball Earn Bounce Back Win Over Elmira

PITTSFORD, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher University men's basketball team hosted Elmira College on Saturday, and after a tough defeat on Friday, the Cardinals bounced back to earn a 102-76 victory. Fisher moves to 3-4 on the year and 1-1 in conference competition.

Ryan Gentile started out the scoring for Fisher finishing on a three point shot assisted by Sean Williams. The Cardinals took the lead one minute into the first half and never gave it up. Brendan Trapper converted on a jump shot and layup, both assisted by Daniel Cook, to bring momentum on their side for the rest of the half. Fisher went on a scoring run of 15 points, completely pull away from the Soaring Eagles. The run started on a layup by Jack Foley, assisted by Cook. Trapper added six points; Cook tallied two, Gentile added three and Connor Recore with two to add to the run. Cole Thompson capitalized on a three-point opportunity with ten minutes to play to put the team in front 32-14. Eric Kegler and Brad Fowler added to the Cardinals success, both tallying scores and at the three-minute mark, Foley threw a perfect pass up for Trapper who finished right at the rim. Joe Morrell finished out the scoring for the Cardinals in the first half with a three pointer. Fisher went into the break with a 57-30 lead.

As the second half began, the Cardinals quickly showed they were not going to let up. Cook had the first basket of the second half off an assist by Foley. Riley Spencer took over for Elmira but it was not enough. The Cardinals had a handful of scorers in the second half to create a gap that Elmira was unable to climb out of. Matt Lettko had his first points of the game with seven minutes left and Akinlana Popoola added to the score board off a jump shot. Brendan McRoy and Connor Williams both tallied five points in the last four minutes of play. Jackson Sullivan finished out the scoring for Fisher on a layup assisted by Louis Fay. At the end of 40 minutes, the Cardinals took the win by a final score of 102-75.

Cook finished leading the way with 18 points, eight assists and six rebounds. He went 7-for-7 on FG and 4-for-5 on FT. Gentile finished with 17 points, one rebound, going 5-for-5 on three pointers and 6-for-7 on FG. Trapper had 16 points, two assists and one assist. Foley ended with seven points, seven rebounds and four rebounds.

Up next for the Cardinals, the team will travel to Buffalo, NY on Dec. 6 and compete against the University at Buffalo. The game is set to start at 6 p.m.
