PITTSFORD, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher University men's basketball team hosted Alfred University on Friday night as their first home game of the season. At the end of a 40-minute battle, the Cardinals could not hold on and took defeat by a final score of 64-66.
The Cardinals took an early lead, with Daniel Cook converting on two layups, both assisted by Brendan Trapper. Jack Foley started a run for Fisher three minutes in with a layup and an additional free throw point. Trapper, Cook and Cole Thompson added to the momentum to push the lead to the biggest of the day, Fisher was up by 11 with ten minutes to go in the first half. The rest of the frame was a battle, but the Cardinals took a 36-29 advantage into the break. Foley led the way with ten points, while Cook and Trapper each contributed eight.
As the second half began, the pressure was on for both teams. Alfred started to close the gap quickly, but could not quite tie it up. Ryan Gentile got into the score sheet, hitting a three pointer off an assist from Sean Williams. With 12 minutes to go in the game, the Saxon's tied the game up at 49 apiece. Gentile answered back, tallying two points, with an assist from Kegler. At the 10:48 minute mark, Alfred took the lead by one. Tensions got high as the second half started winding down, teams went back and forth with leading the game minute by minute. Trapper tied the game up at 57-57 with 6:30 left. S. Williams took matters into his own hands, finishing on a fast break layup. The Cardinals held the lead after that until two minutes were left in the game. The Saxon's took a lead by two and didn't give it up. At the end of 40 minutes, Fisher falls to Alfred 64-66.
Trapper led the team in points with 17 on the night, He had four assists and four rebounds. Cook was close behind with 12 points, six rebound and three assists. Foley had 11 points, three assists and a team high nine rebounds, going 4-for-4 on FG and 3-for-4 on FT.
Up next for the Cardinals, they will host Elmira College on Saturday, Dec. 3rd. Tip off is set for 4 p.m.
