GENEVA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University men's basketball team were on the road to begin their 2022-23 season, taking on Hobart College. The team was unable to mount a comeback against the Statesmen and fell by a final score of 88-65. The Cardinals begin the year 0-1, while Hobart start 1-0.
Jack Foley opened up the scoring with a three-pointer in the opening minute of the game. Fisher did not score again until the 14:11 mark, when
Eric Kegler hit a jump shot in the paint to cut the deficit to six points. Made baskets by
Brendan Trapper and
Daniel Cook kept the came within striking distance as the first half moved on, but at the break, the Cardinals trailed 41-26.
In the second frame, Cook used scores to keep Fisher in the game, but the Statesmen began to pull away. A three-pointer by
Joe Morrell and
Connor Recore, along with two made free-throws by Morrell, helped build some momentum for the Cardinals, but they were unable to maintain it and fell by a final score of 88-65.
Cook finished the day with a team high 18 points, while collecting four rebounds. Trapper was the other Cardinal to go for double-digit scoring, ending the game with 15 points.
Sean Williams led the team with six assists and three steals.
Fisher head off to Virginia Wesleyan for the Tip-Off Tournament. They begin with a 7 p.m. matchup against Pfeiffer University on Friday, Nov. 11. They will then play the winner of Colby Sawyer and Virginia Wesleyan.
