VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – The St. John Fisher University men's basketball team competed against Pfeiffer University at the Virginia Weslyan Tip-Off Tournament. After 40 minutes of competitive basketball, the Cardinals were able to come away with the 79-74 victory, their first of the season. With the result, both teams now hold a 1-1 record in the early parts of the season.
Brendan Trapper was the first Cardinal to score, giving the team the lead with an early three-pointer. The two teams were evenly matched throughout the first half, with neither unit going ahead by more than a few points. On a couple of occasions, Fisher went ahead by four points on made baskets by Trapper and
Daniel Cook, but the Falcons did not let the game escape them and they kept the came close. At the half, the two teams were even at 40-40.
The second half, was just as competitive as the first. Neither team budged in the opening ten minutes, but then the Cardinals began to pull away a bit. Cook knocked down two free-throws to put the team in front 60-57. Moments later Cook hit a jump shot before
Ryan Gentile made a three to put Fisher in front by eighth points, the largest lead of the evening. Pfieffer attempted to come back into the game, but layups by
Jack Foley and Cook helped secure the 79-74 victory.
Cook led the way with 26 points and eight rebounds. Trapper was also a 20 point scorer, shooting 3-for-6 from three and 8-for-12 from the field.
Sean Williams was the lead distributer with eight assists, and it went along with 13 points and four rebounds.
The Cardinals will take on the host Marlins on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 3 p.m. Virginia Weslyan won their game on Friday, 73-46.
