PITTSFORD, NY – The St. John Fisher University men's soccer team (7-5-3, 6-2-1 Empire 8) will look to lock down their second title in three years, beginning with a matchup on Thursday, November 4 at 7:30 p.m. against Utica University.
With a win on Thursday, the Cardinals would automatically host the Championship Final against the winner of the other semi-final game, which will feature Hartwick at Medaille.
Season Recap: The Cardinals went 6-2-1 in league play, outscoring opponents, 18-9 in the nine games. For the second time in four years,
Ben Woolingham leads the team in scoring (11 points), goals (5), and has been credited with an assist, while
Brennan Brown has 10 points on four goals and two assists. Meanwhile, goalkeeper
Jadon Schlierf has played in all 15 games this season, having recorded a 0.95 goals against average and a .806 save percentage with five solo shutouts.
Scouting the Opponents: The Cardinals defeated the Pioneers in their regular season matchup in a 2-0 win. The first half saw the strong defense form the Cardinals, who faced 10 shots in opposition to the four of their own. While the first half ended scoreless, the Cardinals turned up the pressure in the second half, totaling nine shots. Woolingham scored the first goal for Fisher in the 82
nd minute, and a shot from Brown was deflected off a defender for the second goal in five minutes. While Utica outshot Fisher 21-13, the Cardinals ended with four on goal while the Pioneers tallied just three.
Player to Watch: The player of the week to watch for the Empire 8 tournament is
Justin Bonetto. The graduate student started 15 games this season, tallying two goals and seven points. Bonetto had 10 shots on goal and played 1156 minutes.
