Women’s Basketball Falls to Yellowjackets in Crosstown Shootout

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher University women's basketball team competed in the first day of the Marks Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout against the University of Rochester on Thursday night. After 40 minutes of play, the Cardinals took defeat by a final score of 55-68 against the Yellowjackets. Fisher falls to 3-1 on the season, while the Yellowjackets moved to 3-0.

To start the Cardinals scoring for the night was Clarie Kruszka with a good three point shot, the assist by Katie Moravec. Fisher was down to start but kept fighting back, going bucket for bucket with the Yellow jackets all half. Sidney Tomasso sunk a three to shorten the gap between the two teams. Kaitlyn Walker had two good free throws, along with Moravec with a good lay up to look to start the run for the Cardinals. Tomasso had the last six points for Fisher in the first quarter of play, and then the first two going into the second quarter, she brought the score deficit to only four points. Walker added to the momentum created by Tomasso, tallying four points shortly after. Kruszka had the last scoring opportunities for the Cardinals of the half, she tailed three points of off a lay up and a free throw shot to bring the Cardinals into halftime down 30-37. Presleigh Brunner finished the first half with eight rebounds to lead the team.

As the second half began, Walker finished a lay up to start the scoring run for Fisher. Kruszka was next to get two points on the board, Walker followed on a free throw and Moravec with a three pointer to bring Fisher to within three. Walker had a great defensive rebound, transitioning the ball to Brunner to finish a jumper on the other end. Towards the end of the second half, the Yellowjackets started to pull away, but the Cardinals didn't stop fighting back. Emily McLaughlin and Lauren Petrie both got their first points of the game in the fourth quarter with three pointers. To finish out the scoring for the Cardinals and the game was Emilia Johnson she sunk a jumper at the buzzer with an assist from Brunner. After a hard fought battle throughout 40 minutes, the Cardinals will fall to the Yellowjackets 55-68.

Tomasso lead the team with 16 points and two assists, adding seven rebounds. Walker followed right behind with 12 points, two assists and seven rebounds, going 4-for-6 on her free throws for the night. Brunner had a hot hand for rebounds, finishing with 10. Kruszka tallied eight points, two assists and one rebound.

The Cardinals return to the Marks Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout at the University of Rochester to take on RIT on Saturday, Nov. 19th. The game is set to start at 6 p.m.
