Big Fourth Quarter Lifts No. 17 Cardinals Over Hiram College

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, OH– The St. John Fisher University women's basketball team defeated Hiram College on the road Friday at the John Carroll Tip-Off Tournament. The Cardinals were down half way through the fourth quarter, but a big comeback helped them defeat Hiram, 68-61. Fisher now sits at 2-0 on the season while the Terriers fall to 0-2.

To start the first half scoring for the Cardinals, Claire Kruszka finished a fast break layup that was assisted by Kaitlyn Walker. Lauren Nawojski had a defensive rebound early on in the first half that she then transitioned to the other side of the court to tally two points for Fisher. Presleigh Brunner and Walker both capitalized on layup opportunities to end the first period, putting the Cardinals up by one. At the start of the second period, it looked like Hiram was starting to find momentum, but Fisher quickly closed the gap. Three points tallied on a layup and a free throw by Katie Moravec and Kruszka finishing on a free throw helped Fisher go into halftime leading 27-25.

The second half began and Sidney Tomasso wasted no time getting on the board, she recorded a lay up to put the Cardinals up by four. Walker went on a scoring run of her own, scoring seven points for Fisher in just over three minutes. The third period was a battle back and forth between the two teams, both holding leads throughout the ten minutes. The Cardinals dominated the fourth quarter outscoring the Terriers 20-8. Leading the fourth quarter scoring was Brunner and Walker, with a combined for 14 points. Fisher had their greatest lead in the fourth quarter and kept the momentum from there to finish the game strong. The Cardinals won with a final score of 68-61 at the end of 40 minutes.

Walker led the way for Fisher on the scoreboard for the night, she finished with 20 points, four assists and nine rebounds. Tomasso and Brunner also had stand out performances, the two finished with 12 points, one assist each, Tomasso with six rebounds and Brunner with eight.

Up next for the Cardinals, they will take on Allegheny College on November 12th at 12:00 pm to conclude the John Carroll Tip-Off Tournament.
