ALBANY, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University women's soccer team were on the road on Sunday to take on Russell Sage College, who were at the top of the Empire 8 Conference standings. However a goal in the 76th minute lifted the Cardinals over the Gators. Fisher now sit at 5-2-3 and 3-0 in conference play, while Sage fall to 4-7-1 and 3-1 in E8 play. The Cardinals now sit atop the conference standings.
The first half was quiet for both teams, with neither scoring a goal. Fisher did have a few chances, but were unable to find the back of the net.
Megan Letta had a chance go high in the 25th minute and a couple of minutes later a header by
Jenn Kirker went just wife of the goal. In the 30th minute,
Abby Fagnani took a chance after a corner kick that was blocked by the defense. At the half, the score was even at 0-0.
Letta and
Emma Spelman both had chances in the beginning of the second half, but both shots were blocked by the defense. After a foul by the Gators,
Jackie Gervais set up for a free kick and sent it past the goalie for the first goal of the game. Neither team took another shot the rest of the game, and the Cardinals walked away with the 1-0 win.
Up next for Fisher is a home game on Wednesday, Oct. 12 against Empire 8 foe, Utica University. The match is set to kick-off at 7 p.m. at Growney Stadium.
