Women’s Soccer Draw Against Utica After Second Half Battle

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University women's soccer team were at home on Wednesday and hosted Utica University. After a scoreless first half, both teams battled to end the game in a 2-2 draw. The Cardinals now hold a 5-2-4 record and 3-0-1 in Empire 8 games, while the Pioneers sit at 3-6-3 and 1-1-2 in conference play.
 
In the first half, Fisher had five corner kick opportunities to get on the scoreboard. In the second minute of the game Emma Spelman had back- to-back corner kicks that lead to a shot by Jenn Kirker, with the shot going just wide. In the last 15 minutes of the first half Fisher took three additional corners kicks with Kayla Rhude getting a foot on one that was sent just wide. The two teams went into the break tied at 0-0.
 
The second half scoring was started in the 53rd minute by Utica, but just five minutes later Jenn Kirker stepped up for a penalty kick for the Cardinals first opportunity to score. Kirker capitalized on the opportunity given, tying the game 1-1. To finish out the scoring for Fisher, a perfect pass was made by Spelman in the 82nd minute, finding Kate Rachwal for a header goal. Utica acted fast as they recorded thier second goal of the game to tie it up in the 83rd minute. Grace Wolsieffer had an opportunity in the final minutes of the game, but the match ended in a 2-2 draw.
 
The team will be on the road on Saturday, October 15th, as they face Medaille University for a  6 p.m. match up against the Mavericks.
