Women’s Soccer Cruise Past Medaille

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University women's soccer team traveled to Medaille University on Saturday for an Empire 8 contest. The Cardinals totaled 36 shots, 18 of which were on goal, on their way to a 2-0 victory. With the wine, Fisher holds a 6-2-4 record and 4-0-1 in conference play, while the Mavericks fall to 2-8-1 and 0-5 against E8 opponents.

The Cardinals were held scoreless in the first half, but they had a few solid opportunities. Kayla Rhude, Megan Letta, Jenn Kirker and Jacqueline Gervais all had shots that required a save by the keeper. As the half concluded, Kyra Kenyon and Siobhan McMakin also had shots that were on target, but the Mavericks goalie was on her game and made the stops to keep the game even 0-0.

Three minutes into the second half, Emma Spelman was able to take advantage of an opportunity and slot in the first goal of the evening. The team continued to take shots as they totaled 24 in the second half and they eventually found the back of the net for a second time in the 74th minute. Rhude fired a shot on target and as it got pass the keeper, the Cardinals led 2-0. The team only faced one shot in the second half and cruised to another conference victory.

Fisher had a strong first half, with 12 shots compared to 1 for Medaille. But in the second half, Fisher doubled the number of shots from the first half, tallying 24. The Cardinals one save came in the first half, as the defense did not allow the ball to travel to goalie Avery Brynes.

The Cardinals will continue their streak of Empire 8 games, with a two home games this week, beginning with a Tuesday matchup against Nazareth College, before taking on Alfred University on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 6 p.m. at Growney Stadium. The game on Saturday will be senior day for the Cardinals.
