UTICA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University men's soccer team were on the road on Saturday for an Empire 8 contest against Utica University. The two teams are at the top of the E8 standings and after 90 minutes of action the Cardinals were able to come away with the 2-0 victory over the Pioneers. This results moves Fisher to 4-4-2 on the season and 3-1 in conference play, while Utica fall to 5-4-1 and 2-1-1 in conference competition.
 
The first half saw the cardinals play on the defensive, facing ten shots, while only taking four of their own. The first shot came in the 19th minute as Jackson Bishop's went over the cross bar. Matt Gentile, Parker Hotchkiss and Troy Jezorio all took shots that were off target and after 45 minutes of play, neither team found the goal and the score was 0-0.
 
The Cardinals turned up the pressure in the second half, totaling nine shots. Ben Woolingham scored the first goal for Fisher in the 82nd minute. Reese Powers played a ball into the box and a sliding Woolingham was able to knock the ball in for the 1-0 lead. However, the Cardinals were not satisfied and they were searching for another goal to put the game away. The opportunity came in the 87th minute, when a shot by Brennan Brown deflected off of a defender for the own goal, putting Fisher ahead 2-0.
 
Goalkeeper Jadon Schlierf tallied another shut out win, this time tallying three saves to do so. This is his fifth shutout of the season, and third consecutive shutout.
 
Up next for the Cardinals is another conference battle on the road. They travel to Hartwick College for a 3 p.m. match on Saturday, October 15.
