PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University football team were home on Saturday and celebrated Hall of Fame weekend with a victory over Hartwick College. The 28 first half points for the Cardinals helped propel them to a 44-26 final score. Fisher now holds a 4-4 record and are 2-2 in conference play, while the Hawks drop to 2-6 and 0-5 in conference play.
The Cardinal defense made the first impactful play of the game by forcing a turnover on downs on the first Hartwick drive. Joe Mischia and
Jason Rodriguez made a tackle on fourth and two to give the Cardinals the ball. The offense capitalized by going 56 yards in eight plays to score the first touchdown of the day thanks to a 11 yard run by
Malachi Duvall. The defense were impressive again to force a three-and-out, the Cardinals turned into a seven play, 40 yards drive that lead to a touchdown from
Aaron Chase to
Gabe Maloni.
The Hawks scored their first points in the beginning of the second quarter, settling for a field goal to cut the deficit to 14-3. The Cardinals answered quickly going 62 yards on four plays, including the 39 yard pitch-and-catch from Chase to Maloni to put the team ahead 21-3. After Hartwick scored their first touchdown of the day, Chase found DePalma in the endzone for a nine hard touchdown and heading into halftime, Fisher were in front 28-10.
The scoring slowed down a little for the Cardinals as they totaled 16 points the rest of the game. One of those touchdowns was Chase finding Maloni for the third time and then in the fourth, Chase through a 43 yard dime to Depalma for his second touchdown catch of the day. In total, Chase finished throwing 15-for-19 for 204 yards and five touchdowns. On the ground, Duval rushed 21 times for 136 yards and a touchdown. Maloni and Depalma were the stars of the receiving group, with Maloni going 7-96-3 and Depalma adding 4-74-2.
Up next for the Cardinals is a road game against SUNY Cortland on Saturday, Nov. 5. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
