UTICA, N.Y.- The St. John Fisher University field hockey team was on the road on Saturday for a night game at Utica University. The Cardinals defeated the Pioneers 3-1 at the end of 60 minutes of play to finish out the regular season. Fisher has a 8-10 overall record and is 7-2 in Empire 8 play. The Pioneers finish with a 7-9 record and 6-3 in the conference. With this win, the team clinches the No. 2 seed for the 2022 Empire 8 Field Hockey Championships.
As the first half began, the Cardinals quickly got on the board. Just two minutes into the game, the first shot taken by Fisher was converted to a goal. Audrey Grieb took a penalty corner that found Taylor Scrocca, she fired and scored to take the lead for the Cardinals. The next three penalty corners all had shots behind them, none were able to capitalize. Molly Fisher took the last shot of the half with five minutes left to play, there was a defensive save by Utica, which ended the first half with the Cardinals leading 1-0.
In the second half, Fisher started the scoring for the Cardinals at the 41 minute mark. She shot off a low angle deflection finding the back of the net. This tally brought the Cardinals up by two. What looked like a no goal shot turned out to count for Utica, this brought the score to 2-1 with 10 minutes to play. Emma Cooper got on the board with just three minutes left, bringing the score to 3-1. This tally looked to be the goal that secured a Cardinals victory. Fisher took 11 shots and had 11 penalty corners throughout the game. Sophia Trozzi had four saves on the day.
Up next for the Cardinals is the 2022 Empire 8 Field Hockey Championships. The Cardinals hold the no. 2 seed in the tournament. With that ranking they are set to host a semifinal game with the winner of the No. 3 seed and No. 6 seed match up on Friday, November 4th.
